How Do I Unlock My Door?

Section: Doors & AccessCategory: Doors & AccessHow-to2 min read

Summary

Your available unlock methods depend on your building setup. You may be able to unlock with the Grata app, a PIN or keypad, an intercom or common-area button, or a building-approved backup method such as a fob or physical key.
If your door will not unlock▾
  • Try another approved access method if your building provides more than one (PIN, fob, physical key).
  • For app unlock issues, check Bluetooth and app permissions — see Bluetooth Not Working or Bluetooth / Range Troubleshooting.
  • If a method you were told about is missing from the app, contact your building team or see Report Incorrect Account Information.
  • If you are locked out and no method works, contact your building's front desk, security, or emergency line.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1Step 1: Use the Digital Key or door control in the Grata app to unlock your suite door.

  • You may need to stand near the lock or reader for Bluetooth to connect.
  • Bluetooth must be enabled on your phone.
  • App unlock only works if your building has enabled Digital Key for your unit.

2Step 2: Some buildings let residents unlock with a personal PIN entered on a keypad or smart lock.

  • PINs require a powered keypad or smart lock on the door.
  • Enter your PIN at the keypad and press to confirm.
  • PIN rules, length, and availability vary by building.
  • See Lock or Unlock Door with a PIN code for full steps.

3Step 3: Some entrances, lobby doors, elevators, or amenity spaces may appear under Common Areas in the app.

  • These are separate from your suite or unit door unlock.
  • Tap the door name in Common Areas to send an unlock request when your building enables it.
  • Availability depends on building setup and your resident permissions.
  • See Unlock Intercom and Common Area Doors with the Grata App for details.

4Step 4: Some buildings issue fobs, key cards, or physical credentials for suite doors, common areas, or building entrances.

  • Some buildings provide a physical key — this may work when app, PIN, or electronic access is unavailable.
  • Guest or temporary access may also be available for visitors — see Create Guest PIN or Guest App.
  • Not every building uses all of these methods. Contact your building team to confirm what is available.

Important Notes

  • Some lock models or lock settings may vary by property.
  • Residents should not change master PINs unless Grata or property management explicitly allows it.
  • If the PIN does not work, confirm the correct PIN and contact property management or support.

Tips

  • Enter the PIN slowly and confirm each digit before pressing #.
  • If the keypad does not respond, wake the keypad again before retrying.
