Does Bluetooth Always Need to Be On?

Section: Doors & AccessCategory: FaqGuide2 min read

Summary

Bluetooth does not need to be on for every Grata app feature, but it may need to be on when you are unlocking supported doors or locks nearby. Bluetooth helps your phone communicate with nearby access hardware, while Wi-Fi or cellular helps the Grata app load account information, sync updates, and connect to online services. The exact access behaviour may vary by building, lock model, and enabled features.

When Bluetooth needs to be on

  • When you unlock a Bluetooth-supported lock or door using app-based access such as Digital Key
  • When you are standing near the door and the app needs to recognize nearby access hardware
  • When your building uses nearby phone-to-lock communication for the door you are trying to open
  • If you turn Bluetooth off, these nearby unlock features may not work until you turn Bluetooth back on

What still works through Wi-Fi or cellular

  • Signing in to the Grata app
  • Viewing app content, notices, and account details
  • Loading access permissions and other information synced from your building
  • Receiving updates or notifications when your building enables them
  • Syncing certain account or access changes that require an internet connection

Why requirements vary by building

  • Different buildings use different lock and access-control hardware
  • Not every door uses Bluetooth — some may rely more on internet-based access, PINs, or other methods
  • Some doors may require internet, Bluetooth, or both depending on the setup
  • Property management controls which access methods are enabled for your unit and building

If Bluetooth access is not working

  • Turn Bluetooth on at the phone level before trying again at the door
  • Confirm the Grata app has Bluetooth or Nearby Devices permission
  • Stand near the lock or reader when using app-based access
  • Fully close and reopen the Grata app, then retry
  • Use another approved access method if your building provides one, such as a PIN
  • See Bluetooth Not Working for permission and phone setting checks
