Can I Access My Unit If My Phone Dies?

Section: Doors & AccessCategory: AccessGuide1 min read

Summary

If your phone dies, you may still be able to access your unit depending on what backup options your building provides. The most common backup is a keypad PIN — if your building has PIN access enabled and you already know your PIN, you can enter it at the door without your phone.
If you do not know your PIN or your building does not support PIN access, options depend on building setup and may include a physical key, fob, or reaching your building team.

What to do before your phone dies

  • Find your PIN in the Grata app under Manage Access and memorize it or write it down while you still have charge.
  • Confirm your building has a PIN-enabled keypad at your suite door — not all buildings do.
  • Ask your building team whether fobs, physical keys, or any backup credential are available for your unit.
  • Check your building's emergency contact information while you still have access to the app.

Backup access options

  • Keypad PIN — If your building has PIN access enabled, stand at your suite door, wake the keypad, enter your resident PIN, and press # to unlock.
  • Physical key — If your building provides one, a physical key works without any app or power.
  • Fob or key card — Some buildings issue fobs or cards that work independently of the Grata app.
  • Building front desk or concierge — Some buildings can assist with access during business or after hours.
  • Backup options vary by building — contact your building team to confirm what is available for your unit.

What may vary by building

  • Whether a keypad PIN is enabled for your suite lock.
  • Whether physical keys, fobs, or cards are issued to residents.
  • What the building's after-hours or emergency access process is.
  • Whether there is a front desk or security desk that can assist.
  • Some buildings use digital-only access with no mechanical backup.

If you are locked out

  • Try your PIN at the keypad first if your building uses PIN access.
  • Use your physical key or fob if you have one.
  • Contact your building's front desk, security desk, or after-hours emergency line.
  • If your building has a posted emergency number near the entrance, use that.
  • For app or access-permissions issues, contact Grata support.

Important Notes

  • Ask your building team whether fobs, physical keys, or any backup credential are available for your unit.
